Yugioh Metal Raiders - The Second Booster Pack Ever!

God of Cards: Yugioh Metal Raiders Set Inhalt Blogbanner

The second Yugioh set in German

On 26.06.2002, only about 3 months after the release of the first booster set in the TCG (LOB), the next set called Metal Raiders was released. Metal Raiders, or MRD for short, also had 2 Secret Rare cards to offer. Furthermore, Konami introduced Counter Trap cards and the first so-called "Hand Trap" with MRD! But that was far from all, because MRD contains incredibly strong cards that are still played today or have since been banned.

Highlights of the second Yugioh Set

Now let's get to the 2 Secret Rare cards, the first Counter Trap cards, the first Hand Trap, the Meta changing cards, and much more!

Thousand Dragon

Secret Rare

An extremely popular & nostalgic monster that is well known from the anime, used by Joey Wheeler! Thousand Dragon was a monster seen repeatedly, especially in the 1st anime, and it was also quite strong. In the TCG, the card was also occasionally summoned from the Fusion Deck to the field using the Spell card "Metamorphosis"!

Both Fusion Materials "Time Wizard" (Ultra Rare) and "Baby Dragon" (Common), which are also very well known from the 1st anime, were released with this set. Especially Time Wizard could be extremely strong even in the TCG. After all, with Time Wizard, you had a 50% chance to destroy every monster the opponent controlled.

God of Cards: Tausenddrache Kartenbild

Gate Guardian

Secret Rare

The 2nd Secret Rare is the strongest Main Deck monster of that time, Gate Guardian! This is essentially a fusion of 3 other monsters, which can be seen relatively clearly in the artwork. The 3 monsters required to summon the mighty Gate Guardian were also released in MRD. The upper part of this card depicts "Sanga of the Thunder". In the middle (essentially the torso), we can clearly recognize "Kazejin". And the lower part consists of "Suijin". All 3 cards are Super Rares.

God of Cards: Torwächter Kartenbild

Those were the 2 Secret Rares of the 2nd Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game set. However, those were more cards that people know & love from the anime. As we mentioned above, this set has a lot more to offer. Because Konami released incredibly strong cards with this set, which were a MUST in every deck back then. But even today, some of these cards are still actively played. Now let's get to the competitive cards!

Solemn Judgment

God of Cards: Feierliches Urteil Kartenbild

Ultra Rare

We'll start right off with arguably one of the best Counter Trap cards in the history of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG! As already mentioned, Konami only introduced Counter Trap cards with MRD. The 3 other Counter Traps from this set, "Seven Tools of the Bandit", "Magic Jammer", and "Horn of Heaven" (all three Ultra Rare), were also played in most decks for a very long time. Solemn Judgment is, however, the only one among these cards that has made it all the way to 2023 and will likely continue to be played every now and then. Because essentially, the effect of this card is just: NO!, making it a very strong card to both protect your own cards and disrupt the opponent's setup.

Kuriboh - the first Hand Trap in Yu-Gi-Oh!

God of Cards: Kuriboh Kartenbild

Super Rare

Not only were Counter Traps a novelty. Kuriboh, which we all of course already knew from the 1st anime, was also released with MRD . Kuriboh is the first Hand Trap in Yu-Gi-Oh! history! Even though Kuriboh was never really played in the meta, we would like to mention that a finalist of the Yu-Gi-Oh! German Championship 2011 (in Kassel) actually used Kuriboh in the final, thus protecting his last Life Points! Absolutely legendary move!

The next 2 cards on this list are monsters that were played in pretty much every deck for many years and changed the meta significantly over time. Even today, you very rarely see at least one of the two in use in one deck or another!

Witch of the Black Forest & Sangan

God of Cards: Hexe vom schwarzen Wald & Sangan Kartenbild

Rare

Witch of the Black Forest & Sangan have seen an incredible amount of play in Yu-Gi-Oh!. With both, you had the opportunity to search certain monsters from the deck to the hand relatively quickly. At the same time, they were also very good as protection. You could also use both monsters very well in combination with cards that required a monster as a tribute, etc. Later, they were also popular in combination with the Monarchs and could be summoned from the deck with Mystic Tomato, a monster that was only released in the next main set. These 2 "searchers" only really became a problem when the game-changing set "Invasion of Chaos" was released. After a while, the Witch was banned, and Sangan was limited to 1. In the meantime, both cards have received a so-called "Errata", which weakened their effects, and thus both cards are allowed at 3 again. Even if they are hardly played anymore, you still see Sangan in action here and there, even if it is very rare!

Change of Heart, Mirror Force & Heavy Storm

God of Cards: Überläufer, Spiegelkraft & Schwerer Sturm Kartenbild

Change of Heart (Ultra Rare), Mirror Force (Ultra Rare), and Heavy Storm (Super Rare) are 3 more incredibly strong cards that were also a must-have for every deck. These 3 cards are/were powerful anyway, but especially when you compare them to the cards available up to that point, they were simply far too strong and therefore indispensable. It didn't take long before Konami limited/banned these cards. All 3 cards were quickly limited to 1. Eventually, both Change of Heart and Heavy Storm were banned. While Mirror Force is now allowed at 3 again and is hardly played, Heavy Storm is still banned today! Change of Heart was also not allowed until recently but managed to make its comeback in 2022 and is now limited to 1.

Thunder Dragon

God of Cards: Donnerdrache Kartenbild

Common

With Thunder Dragon, you could already generate good card advantage back then. You discarded it through its own effect and added 2 more copies from the deck to your hand. If you also had "Graceful Charity", you could draw 3 cards and discard the remaining 2 Thunder Dragons, which was very effective. Along with Thunder Dragon, the Fusion Monster "Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon" was also released in MRD. So if you had a Thunder Dragon + the Fusion Spell card "Polymerization" in hand, you could directly summon Twin-Headed Thunder Dragon from the Fusion Deck. However, Thunder Dragon only became actively played when (who would have thought) the game-changing set "Invasion of Chaos" was released. Because in addition to the combination with "Graceful Charity", you could use the dragon very effectively in combination with the Chaos monsters.

However, it is actually the case that Thunder Dragon can even be played in meta-viable decks today, in 2023! In addition, many other Thunder Dragons have been released over time. Who would have thought that back then?

Now we come to the last Meta card of the set! A card that was also played in pretty much every deck for several years.

Magician of Faith

God of Cards: Magier des Glaubens Kartenbild

Rare

When you read the short effect text of this magician, you immediately realize how incredibly strong she must have been in the old Yu-Gi-Oh! format. Magician of Faith was truly a powerhouse. The fact that you could recycle any Spell card from the graveyard with this monster was simply too powerful. Considering how many incredibly strong Spell cards already existed at the time, such as Pot of Greed, Graceful Charity, Heavy Storm, Raigeki, and so on. You can't even list them all. In addition, more and more strong Spell cards were released with subsequent sets. Magician of Faith was therefore welcome in every deck, and no less than three times!

Today, you don't see this card at all anymore, as Flip monsters are generally too slow for the Meta Game. Who knows if that will change one day!

Even though Magician of Faith was a key card in many decks and could decide many games in combination with Spell cards, we don't want to end this blog with her. Because we have kept one very important, iconic monster for the end. It is a very popular monster from the anime, which was often used by the main character Yami Yugi. Although the card never had anything to do with the Meta, it is still one of the favorite cards of many Yu-Gi-Oh! fans and should not be missing from any collection. But that's enough words, because the artwork of this nostalgic card definitely says more than 1000 words. Here we go!

Summoned Skull

God of Cards: Herbeigerufener Totenkopf Kartenbild

Ultra Rare

Even though this monster, as already mentioned, was never Meta viable, Yu-Gi-Oh! players back then found it fascinating that you only had to tribute 1 monster for Summoned Skull, while 2 tributes are necessary for Dark Magician. Because they both have 2500 ATK. Thus, the Archfiend was definitely the better card in that regard.

➡️ Conclusion

We at God of Cards believe that Metal Raiders is one of the best sets in Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG history, as the difference to the previous set (LOB) is simply too massive. MRD essentially made so many cards from LOB useless, as they could hardly keep up with the new cards from MRD. In addition, many iconic cards were introduced with this set. So if you feel like opening this set again, we can recommend purchasing the Korean reprint version right here in our shop! Because the display, which contains a full 40 booster packs, is currently on sale with us! For an unbeatable price of 34,95€, you can treat yourself to the fun!

Would you rather have the English version but don't want to spend a fortune? That won't be a problem soon either, because on 13.07.2023, this set will be reprinted for the first time. You can also pre-order that from us now!
