The second Yugioh set in German
On 26.06.2002, i.e. 3 months after the release of the first booster set in TCG (LOB), the next set called Metal Raiders was released. Metal Raiders or MRD for short, also had 2 Secret Rare cards to offer. In addition, Konami has introduced the counter trap cards with MRD, and the first so-called "hand trap"! But that's not all, because MRD contains incredibly strong cards that are still played today, or are now even banned.

Highlights of the second Yugioh set
Now let's move on to the 2 Secret Rare cards, the first counter trap cards, the first hand trap, the meta changing cards, and much more!
Tausenddrache
Secret Rare
An extremely popular and nostalgic monster that you know very well from the anime by Joey Wheeler! Tausenddrache was especially popular in the 1st century. Anime is a monster that you have seen again and again, and which has also been quite strong. Also in TCG, the card was summoned from time to time by the spell card "Metamorphosis" from the fusion deck to the field!
Both fusion materials "Time Wizard" (Ultra Rare) and "Baby Dragon" (Common), which are also very good from the 1st century. Anime have been released with this set. Grade Time Wizard could even be extremely strong in the TCG. After all, with the Time Wizard you had a 50% chance of destroying every monster of your opponent.
Gatekeeper
Secret Rare
At the 2. Secret Rare is the strongest Main Deck monster at the time, Gatekeeper! This is basically a fusion of 3 other monsters, which you can even see relatively well on the artwork. The 3 monsters necessary to summon the mighty Gatekeeper have also been released in MRD. At the top of this card is "Sanga of Thunder". In the middle (basically the belly) we can see "Kazejin" very well. And the lower part consists of "Suijin". All 3 maps are Super Rares.
These were the 2 Secret Rares of the 2nd century. Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game Sets. However, these were more cards that you know and love from the anime. As we mentioned above, this set has a lot more to offer. Because Konami released incredibly strong cards with this set, which were a MUST in every deck at the time. But even today, some cards under it are still actively played. Now let's move on to the strong cards!
Solemn verdict
Ultra Rare
We'll also start with one of the best counter trap cards in the history of Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG an! As mentioned earlier, Konami didn't introduce the counter trap cards until MRD. Also, the 3 other counter traps from this set "Seven Tools of the Bandit", "Magic Disturbance", and "Horn of Heaven" (all three Ultra Rare) have been played in most decks for a very long time. However, Solemn Judgment is the only one among these cards that has even made it into 2023, and will probably even continue to be played from time to time. Because in principle, the effect of this card is simply: NO!, and is therefore a very strong card to protect your own cards as well as to disturb the opponent during construction.
Kuriboh - the first hand trap in Yu-Gi-Oh!
Super Rare
Not only the counter traps were a novelty. Also Kuriboh, which of course we all already have from the 1. Anime was released with MRD . Kuriboh is the first Handtrap in the Yu-Gi-Oh! History! Even though Kuriboh was never actually played in the meta, we'd like to mention that a finalist of the Yu-Gi-Oh! German Championship 2011 (in Kassel), actually used Kuriboh in the final, and thus protected his last life points! Absolutely legendary move!
The next 2 cards on this list are monsters that have been played in pretty much every deck for many years, and have changed the meta a lot over time. Even today you rarely see at least one of the two, in one or the other deck in use!
Witch of the Black Forest & Sangan
Rare
Witch of the Black Forest & Sangan really have an incredible amount of play in Yu-gi-oh! seen. With both, you had the opportunity to take certain monsters from the deck into your hand relatively quickly. At the same time, they were also very suitable as protection. Also, you could use both monsters very well in combination with cards that had to offer a monster as a tribute or similar. Later, they were also very popular to play in combination with the Monarchs, and could also summon them with the mystical tomato from the deck, a monster that was not released until the next main set. However, these 2 "seekers" only really became a problem when the all-changing set "Invasion of Chaos" was released. After a while, the witch banned, and Sangan was limited to 1. In the meantime, both cards have received a so-called "Errata", which has weakened their effects, and thus both cards are allowed 3 times again. Even if they are hardly played or not played at all, you can see Sangan here and there in action, even if it is very rare!
Defector, Mirror Power & Severe Storm
Overflow (Ultra Rare), Mirror Power (Ultra Rare), and Heavy Storm (Super Rare) are 3 other really incredibly strong cards that have also been a must have for every deck. These 3 cards are/were already powerful, but especially if you compare them with the cards you had available up to that point, they were just way too strong, and therefore indispensable. It didn't take long for Konami to limit/ban these cards. All 3 cards were pretty much limited to 1. At some point, both defectors and severe storms were banned. While mirror power is now allowed again 3 times, and is hardly played, heavy storm is still prohibited today! Defectors were also not allowed until recently, but still managed to make their comeback in 2022, and is now limited to 1.
Donnerdrache
Common
With the Thunder Dragon you could already generate a good card advantage at that time. It was thrown off by its own effect, and 2 more copies were taken from the deck to the hand. If you then had "Elegant Benefactor", you could draw 3 cards with it, and discard the remaining 2 Thunder Dragons, which was very effective. Along with the Thunder Dragon, the fusion monster "Double-Headed Thunder Dragon" was also released in MRD. So if you had a Thunder Dragon + the Fusion Spell card "Polymerization" in your hand, you could directly summon the double-headed Thunder Dragon from the Fusion Deck. However, the Thunder Dragon was only actively played when (who would have thought it) the all-changing set "Invasion of Chaos" was released. Because in addition to the combination with "Elegant Benefactor", you could use the dragon very effectively in combination with the Chaos Monsters.
However, the fact is that today, in 2023, the Thunder Dragon can even be played in meta-enabled decks! In addition, many other Thunder Dragons have been released over time. Who would have thought that at the time?
Now let's move on to the last meta card of the set! A card that has also been played in pretty much every deck for several years.
Magician of Faith
Rare
When you read the short effect text of this magician, you immediately notice how incredibly strong she is in the old Yu-Gi-Oh! format must have been. Magician of faith was truly a power. The fact that you could use this monster to recycle any spell card from the graveyard was just too violent. Considering how many incredibly powerful spell cards already existed at the time, such as Pot of Greed, Elegant Benefactor, Heavy Storm, Raigeki and so on. You can't even list them all. In addition, more and more strong spell cards were released with further sets. Mage of Faith was really welcome in every deck, and no less than three times!
Today you really don't see this map anymore, because flip monsters are generally too slow for the Meta Game. Who knows if that will change one day!
Even though Mage of Faith has been a key card in many decks, and in combination with magic cards could decide a lot of games, we don't want to end this blog with her. Because we kept a very important, iconic monster for last. It is a very popular monster from the ani, which was often used by the main character Yami Yugi. Although the card had never had anything to do with the meta, it is still one of the favorite cards many Yu-Gi-Oh! fans, and should not be missing in any collection. But those were enough words, because the artwork of this nostalgic card definitely says more than 1000 words. Here we go!
Summoned skull
Ultra Rare
Even though, as already mentioned, this monster was never Meta suitable, the Yu-Gi-Oh! Even then, players were fascinated by the fact that you only had to offer 1 monster as a tribute for the summoned skull, while 2 tributes are necessary for the dark magician. Because they both have 2500 ATK. Thus, the Archunderworlder was definitely the better card in this respect.

We at God of Cards are of the opinion that Metal Raiders are among the best sets of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG is history, as the difference to the previous set (LOB) is simply too gigantic. MRD basically rendered so many cards from LOB unusable, as they could hardly keep up with the new cards from MRD. In addition, many iconic cards were introduced with this set, among other things. So if you feel like opening this set again, we can recommend you to buy the Korean reprint version right in our shop! Because Display, which contains a whole 40 Booster Packs, is currently on offer! For an unbeatable price of €34.95 you can treat yourself to the fun!
