The Dark World Archetype - The Monsters of the Dark World
Appearing are these sinister creatures of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Games in 2005. Together with the popular elemental heroes in the Set "Elemental Energy" we were also able to see the Dark World cards for the first time. At the same time, they were also in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! GX . The elemental heroes are still among the favorite archetypes of many Yu-Gi-Oh! Player. But also the Dark World Monsters with their artwork and the sinister design had a very good impression on the Yu-Gi-Oh! players. But it wasn't just the design / artwork that was special about the cards, but also their effects, which you haven't seen before in Yu-Gi-Oh! had! Let's take a closer look at these special effects.
How does the Dark World Archetype work?
With the monsters of the dark world , everything revolves around one thing: throwing off! Yes, it may sound strange, but that's what made it so special. The Dark World monsters all had special effects, but they could only use them if they were first dropped from the hand onto the graveyard by a effect[012758 012758]. However, there was only one Dark World monster that had the effect of dropping another Dark World monster from the hand into the graveyard. These are:
Brron, Mad King of the Dark World
Brron was the only Dark World monster that had the ability to discard a card from your hand without having to rely on another card. However, with Brron you first had to deal combat damage to the enemy! It was all way too slow, which is why Brron wasn't necessarily played.
Cheerful coffin
So first you had to dig up all the cards from the basement and see what kind of cards you have that throw other cards from your hand into the cemetery! There were quite a few (especially spell cards) that could be played very well in combination with the Dark World monsters. Probably the most popular was Happy Coffin!
This ancient map, which seemed to be completely pointless until the release of the Dark World monsters, finally actually had a purpose! Because with this card you could simply throw off up to 3 Dark World monsters from your hand and trigger their effects. Today, of course, there are much better cards than these, which makes them irrelevant again, but back then Fröhlicher Sarg was a highlight.
Going down to the grave
This map was really a very good support for Dark World. You could both discard a potentially important hand card from your opponent and at the same time make sure that a Dark World monster was thrown off your hand! After that, both players drew 1 card. Pretty irrelevant these days, but definitely a good option back then!
But now let's take a closer look at the Dark World monsters.
Broww, Hunters of the Dark World
Broww was and still is a very nice card to get other cards faster in a Dark World Deck. Because when Broww is discarded, you can draw a card from your deck. However, if Broww is actually placed in the graveyard by an opponent's card effect, you can even draw 2 cards!
Beiige, frontline fighters of the dark world
Beiige is much more aggressive. When Beiige is dropped onto the graveyard by a card effect, it goes straight from the graveyard to the field! With 1600 points of attack, he was not so dangerous alone, but he rarely came alone! Alternatively, it could also be used for tribute summons, e.g. to summon monarchs.
Caius the Shadow Monarch
The Monarch who was the best fit for Dark World ! From the attribute Darkness and from the type Underworlder! Thus, Caius shares the 2 most important characteristics with all Dark World monsters, and also works very well, since in a Dark World deck you always summon monsters as a special summon, which you can then sacrifice for Caius. Also more of a card that is a thing of the past, but still extremely strong to at least consider!
But now let's move on to the stronger Dark World monsters.
Goldd & Sillva
Goldd and Sillva were/are the more dangerous monsters of the sinister archetype. They both have the same ATK and DEF values, and the same effect as Beiige. So they, too, only have to be thrown from the hand to the cemetery and then come directly to the field from there. At 2300 ATK, they were already quite a threat back then, but they even have another effect if they are dropped from the hand to the graveyard by an effect of the enemy. In this case, Sillva can shuffle 2 cards from the opponent's hand into the deck. Goldd, on the other hand, destroys 2 cards on the opponent's side of the field.
Over time, the Archetype has received much more support, and more and more cards have been released that could drop cards from the hand to the graveyard through an effect. Here are the rest of the Dark World monsters, and the maps that work incredibly well in combination with the Underworlders of the Dark World.
Ceruli, Guru of the Dark World
We've mentioned a few times now that certain Dark World monsters get an extra effect when they are dropped into the graveyard by an effect of the enemy. But you don't have to leave the whole thing to chance. Ceruli makes sure that's exactly what happens! Because when Ceruli is thrown from the hand, it is summoned to the opponent's side of the field, where it activates the following effect:
"Your opponent must discard 1 card"
However, since this card is now in the possession of the opponent, the effect of this card naturally affects the Dark World player. So in this case, the Dark World player has to discard a card from his hand, which was triggered by the effect of one of the opponent's cards, since Ceruli is on the opponent's field at the time.
Gren & Kahkki
Gren & Kahkki are rather weak monsters, especially in the modern Yu-Gi-Oh! will hardly see any plays. At the time, however, they were quite interesting. When Gren is discarded, he destroys a spell/trap card on the field. Kahkki destroys a monster.
Now let's move on to the 2 probably best Dark World monsters that have been released so far:
Snoww, unlight of the dark world
If Snoww is discarded from your hand, you can take any Dark World card from the deck to your hand. So you can choose something suitable for every situation, which makes Snoww incredibly strong and important. If Snoww is dropped by the effect of an opponent's card, you can also choose a monster in the opponent's graveyard and summon that monster to the defensive position!
Grapha, dragon ruler of the dark world
The strongest Dark World monster to date. With 2700 ATK and 2 incredibly powerful effects, Grapha is arguably the most powerful monster in the archetype (excluding the new Structure Deck). Because when Grapha is discarded, it destroys any card on the field. In addition, you can summon Grapha from the graveyard to the field at any time by simply sending another Dark World monster from its side of the field to your hand. This makes it very hard to get rid of Grapha .
The most popular support cards and combinations with Dark World
As already mentioned, Frölicher Sarg is no longer relevant for the Dark World Decks. Here we show you the best support cards!
Doing business with the dark world
Each player draws 1 card, then each player discards 1 card. Extremely strong in a Dark World deck, but you should not play this card against a Dark World deck!
Kartenzerstörung
An extremely old and limited card. Probably the best spell card in combination with Dark World. The more Dark World monsters you throw off with this card, the stronger the end result. But here, too, the following applies: Don't use ] against Dark 012758 World!
The Gates of the Dark World
Dark World also has a permanent card in the form of a field magic card. With this card you can discard 1 Underworldler monsters (i.e. Dark World monsters) 1 time per turn and draw 1 card from the deck. In addition, it has the permanent effect that all monsters of the type Underworldler receive 300 ATK and DEF. The "cost" of this card is not really worth mentioning, especially because the effect for a Dark World deck is incredibly strong.
The lure of darkness
This card should not be missing from any deck that mainly plays Darkness[012757 012758] monsters. Although this card does not trigger any Dark World effects, it does make the deck much more consistent, as it ensures that you draw 2 more cards from the deck.
"Danger!" Monster
The "Danger!" Monsters are often played together with the Dark World monsters. They're almost made for each other, because they all have pretty much the same, extremely powerful effect:
You discard a random card from your hand! If the discarded card does not meet the danger! monster itself, the danger! Summon monsters to the field and you draw a card as a bonus! But that's not all, because if you have thrown off a Dark World monster with the effect, the effect also activates in the graveyard. In addition, everyone has danger! Monster another 2. Effect that only activates when they are placed in the graveyard by hand (i.e. the same game as the Dark World monsters). Thus, the two Archetypes fit together incredibly well. Here are the 4 most popular dangers! Monsters played in combination with Dark World :
Danger!? Wolpertinger? & Danger! Mottenmann!
Danger!? Tsuchinoko? & Danger! Nessie!
Legendary
The "Fabulous" monsters also have similar effects. However, there is/was mainly 1 Fabulous monster, which is/was very popular with Dark World :
Legendary Raven
Legendary Raven can discard as many cards as you want once per turn. He gets 400 ATK for each card discarded. In addition, his level increases by 1 for each card discarded. So you can use it to create as many Dark World and/or Danger! Throw off monsters however you want, triggering all effects in the graveyard. At the same time, you can optionally make synchro plays, since the raven is a receiver (tuner) monster.
Finally, we'll show you the rest of the Dark World maps!
