God of Cards: Yugioh Legend of Blue Eyes Blogbanner

The first Yugioh set in German

Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon or LOB for short, was the first Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG set. In Germany, this legendary set was released on 08.03.2002, while in Japan it was released as early as 18.05.2000. In addition to the 3 most popular monsters (Blue-Eyes White Dragon, Red-Eyes Black Dragon, and Dark Magician), the set also featured some very powerful cards and the first Secret Rares!

Highlights of the first Yugioh set

Apart from Spell and Trap cards, as you can see, the set consists almost entirely of monsters without effects or Normal Monsters. But let's get to the highlights of this beautiful, nostalgic set.

Gaia the Dragon Champion

Secret Rare

A very popular monster well known from the anime, specifically used by the main character Yami Yugi ! Gaia the Dragon Champion is one of the first 2 Secret Rares released by Konami !

Both Fusion Materials "Gaia The Fierce Knight" (Ultra Rare) and "Curse of Dragon" (Super Rare), including the Fusion Spell card "Polymerization" (Super Rare), which is also well known from the first anime, were released with this set. Anyone who owns this beautiful card as a Secret Rare can be truly proud.

Tri-Horned Dragon

Secret Rare

The 2nd Secret Rare is a Level 8 Normal Dragon monster, which is almost as powerful as the legendary Blue-Eyes White Dragon. Pure nostalgia! This card is also extremely popular among collectors, and just like Gaia the Dragon Champion, Tri-Horned Dragon in Secret Rare from this set is very difficult to find in good condition. Here too: anyone who owns this card can be truly proud!

God of Cards: Dreihörniger Drache Kartenbild

Those were the first 2 Secret Rares of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. However, the most popular cards and the biggest highlights from LOB are actually Ultra Rare! As mentioned, there are 10 different & rare cards of this rarity in this set. But let's start with 5 cards at once. Why 5 at the same time? Most of you will probably have understood the reference, but here we go:

Exodia the Forbidden One

God of Cards: Exodia, die Verbotene Kartenbilder

ALL 5 pieces of Exodia were released for the first time in LOB. All 5 pieces are Ultra Rare. This release made Yu-Gi-Oh! fans very happy and changed the game at the same time! Because with Exodia you now had a completely different way to win the game. Until the release of Exodia, there were actually only 2 ways to win a duel: either a player lost because they had no more cards in their deck (which hardly ever happened), or because their Life Points were reduced to 0! Even though it was anything but easy back then to protect your Life Points long enough to draw all 5 pieces of the Forbidden One, some games were still decided by the combination of these 5 cards! Definitely a must-have in the collection of every Yu-Gi-Oh! fan!

The next 3 cards on this list are arguably the most popular monsters in the series! Pretty much all of you will know which 3 monsters they are, but let's take a look at these beauties now!

Blue-Eyes W. Dragon, Red-Eyes B. Dragon & Dark Magician

God of Cards: Blauäugiger w. Drache, Rotäugiger S. Drache & Dunkler Magier Kartenbilder

Ultra Rare

Although LOB is the first booster set of the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG, Konami provided us with 2 alternative artworks of the 2 most popular/main monsters of the entire series and the entire card game! While Red-Eyes Black Dragon did not receive an alternative artwork in this set, we were able to admire the White Dragon and the Dark Magician with a completely different look. Over the years, these 3 monsters have received many different artworks. In our opinion, these 3 cards are also definitely a must-have for every Yu-Gi-Oh! player out there! It doesn't get more nostalgic than this!

We don't need to emphasize any further that this set has a lot of nostalgic cards to offer. However, surprisingly, that's not the only thing LOB has to offer. Even though it's hard to believe, there are still cards from LOB that you regularly see even in today's meta / modern decks! It's truly incredible when you consider that this set is almost 21 years old and there are now more than 11,000 different cards in the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG!

Cards from LOB that are still played today

God of Cards: weitere LOB Kartenbilder

As you can see, there are still 4 cards from LOB that are still regularly played in many decks today! The 4 cards are exclusively Spell cards. Although these cards were already so powerful back then, 3 of them are "only" Super Rare. The only Ultra Rare is the card "Monster Reborn", which is well known from the anime. However, the most played card is actually "Polymerization", which is also well known. This card is still extremely important in some meta decks today, while "Dark Hole", "Raigeki", and "Monster Reborn" are played significantly less in comparison.

If you're thinking: "So much nostalgia! Now I'd like to order a Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon Display!", we have good and bad news! These displays, which are now more than 20 years old, cost several thousand euros. But as promised, we also have good news! Konami will be reprinting several OG sets for the 25th Anniversary, including LOB! These sets will be released on 13.07.2023! The best part is that you can pre-order it directly from us via this link!

Don't have that much patience? No problem, because Konami has already reprinted Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon in Korean! This display contains 40 booster packs, is available immediately, and is currently on offer in the God of Cards Shop for an unbeatable price of 29,95€!
