The Third Yugioh Set in TCG & Germany
Spell Ruler or SRL for short, was the third Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG set. In Germany, this game-changing set was released on 16.09.2002. However, the set was initially called "Magic Ruler". Konami was forced to change the name to Spell Ruler because there had been issues with another very popular card game called "Magic". For this reason, Konami also had to change Magic Cards, which were originally called "Magic Cards", and therefore named them "Spell Cards".
This set produced arguably the most powerful Spell Cards in the history of Yu-Gi-Oh! So powerful that several of these Spell Cards are still banned today! Among other things, this set also provided very good monsters for the meta at the time, and the Toon cards also made their debut with this set!

Highlights of the Magical Yugioh Set
The strongest cards in this set are, as you might guess from the name (Spell Ruler), definitely the Spell Cards. Nevertheless, we'll start with 2 monsters, which are the only 2 Secret Rares in the set!
Serpent Night Dragon
Secret Rare
A beautiful, nostalgic Dark Dragon. Even though this combination of serpent and dragon was never relevant in the meta, it is definitely an eye-catcher! In our opinion, a very nostalgic collector's item!
Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon
Secret Rare
The 2nd Secret Rare is the cartoon / Toon version of the legendary Blue-Eyes White Dragon with a cold-blooded gaze! Blue-Eyes Toon Dragon belongs to the first Toon cards that made their debut with this set, along with "Toon Mermaid" (Ultra Rare), "Toon Summoned Skull" (Ultra Rare), "Manga Ryu-Ran" (Rare), and of course "Toon World" (Super Rare). This monster is extremely popular in the Yu-Gi-Oh! community and a true collector's item! After all, it is the cartoon version of the White Dragon and at the same time a very important monster of the anime character Pegasus!
The Toon Dragon was also never really meta-relevant, but was played every now and then in certain decks as part of an engine. Of course, it shouldn't be missing from any Toon deck!
The 2 Secret Rares in this set were / are definitely absolute eye-catchers. But as already mentioned, this set is more about the Spell Cards! The Spell Cards that were really so incredibly strong, so unrealistically good, that some of them are still banned today and will probably never be allowed again! That's enough words! Let's get to the powerful Spell Cards of Spell Ruler!
Delinquent Duo
Secret Rare
Such a short effect text, and so incredibly strong. This card was, is, and will forever remain simply unfair. Seriously now, what was Konami thinking with this card? For a ridiculous 1000 Life Points, you take 2 cards from the opponent's hand! Just like that! Delinquent Duo was limited to 1 fairly quickly, but logically that wasn't the solution for such an unfair card. But when you consider that you could once play it 3 times... No words! In any case, this card has been on the Forbidden List for an extremely long time, and that's where it stays!
We've probably already clarified how unrealistically strong and simply unfair Delinquent Duo is. While it's still far from clear what Konami was thinking with the card, it gets even worse. Because Delinquent Duo was only one of its kind. Although it must be said that the card is the worst of its kind, Konami didn't stop at just one. So let's move on to the other 2, also very unfair and now deservedly banned Spell Cards:
The Forceful Sentry & Confiscation
Ultra Rare & Super Rare
Here we have two more extremely short card texts that are so unfair that we can't even understand the world anymore.
The Forceful Sentry puts one card from the opponent's hand back into the deck. You even get to see the opponent's entire hand and can choose the card yourself.
With Confiscation, it's more in the direction of Delinquent Duo. Here too, you first pay 1000 Life Points to discard a card from the opponent's hand to the Graveyard. Unlike Delinquent Duo you only discard one card, but in this case, as with "The Forceful Sentry", you can look at the opponent's hand and choose the respective card yourself!
By now, everyone can probably imagine how frustrating it must have been to play at the time when all 3 of these cards were allowed and even unlimited!
As you can easily see, Konami really overdid it with this set. We can even say that now, before we show you the next extremely strong and banned cards. Because YES! There are even more strong Spell Cards!
Snatch Steal, Painful Choice & Giant Trunade
Ultra Rare & 2x Super Rare
There they are! The next 3 Spell Cards that are still on the Forbidden List today! That brings us to 6 banned cards coming from this one set alone! Konami really meant business with Spell Ruler and threw out all the unfair ideas at once. They really could have at least distributed these cards across several sets.
With Snatch Steal, you could simply take permanent control of any face-up monster of the opponent. In return, the opponent received 1000 Life Points in each turn. Again, "costs" that cannot be taken seriously. Definitely an extremely strong effect, which would be perfectly fine in today's world if Snatch Steal weren't an Equip Spell Card. Because these can be specifically searched from the deck to the hand with certain cards.
Painful Choice would really break everything completely today. With this card, you get one card from the deck to your hand and the remaining 4 into the Graveyard. In today's world, this card would by far be the strongest Spell Card in the entire game.
Also Giant Trunade is and remains locked away. The card simply enables too much, as all Spell and Trap Cards are sent from the field to the hand. The problem is more that you get your own cards back to your hand, which can lead to very unfair combinations.
Those were the absolutely incredibly strong and partly extremely unfair Spell Cards that will probably never be allowed again. But there are also some Spell Cards that managed not to get banned! Here we have 2 more Spell Cards that are still allowed and relatively playable!
Upstart Goblin & Mystical Space Typhoon
Common & Ultra Rare
Here again, we have short card texts. Very short! We like to mention this often, as such short card texts are unimaginable with modern cards. Nowadays, card texts are really incredibly long! Nevertheless, the cards were extremely powerful back then, in some cases even more powerful than today's cards, as we saw earlier.
The effect of Upstart Goblin seems quite harmless at first glance, if not even bad. But this card is so good that it is still limited to 1 today! Why? Because in Yu-Gi-Oh! it's just too good if you can simply draw cards and thus make your deck "faster". The minimum number of deck cards is 40. So if you were to play 3x this card, for example, you would basically only have 37 deck cards and would thus get to your key cards / combos even faster. Hence the limit!
Mystical Space Typhoon on the other hand is allowed 3 times today, but was also limited to 1 in the past! Back then, many Trap Cards were played, so cards like this, or Heavy Storm, Harpie's Feather Duster, etc., were quite annoying. Today it's completely different, so Mystical Space Typhoon is basically not played anymore!
That brings us to the end of the blog! But we actually want to end this blog with a Monster Card instead of one of the countless Spell Cards in this set! Even though it was mainly the Spell Cards of this set that were so incredibly strong, there was this one monster that also dominated the meta and was banned for a long time!
Cyber Jar
Rare
First destroy ALL monsters on the field, and then reveal the top FIVE cards of the deck, and Special Summon all Level 4 or lower monsters to the field, and take the rest to the hand! So basically this card destroys all monsters, and then you draw 5 cards. Again, we can only ask, what was Konami thinking? Sure, Cyber Jar has to be flipped to activate its effect, but that also works if the opponent attacks the face-down Cyber Jar. Especially since it was completely normal back then to set monsters or play several Flip monsters.
Cyber Jar was actually allowed again recently, but is limited to 1! Today, this card is only not so strong because it is now very unlikely that 1 face-down monster on the field can be flipped, as it will probably be destroyed beforehand or similar. Furthermore, it would be an own goal if the opponent attacked the face-down Jar, as they would then draw 5 cards in their own turn, which would just be too intense nowadays. Thus, Cyber Jar is absolutely not played at the moment.
