The Dark World Archetype - The Dark World Monsters

These dark creatures of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Games in 2005. Together with the popular Elemental Heroes in the Set "Elemental Energy" we also have the for the first time Dark World be allowed to see the cards. At the same time, they were also in the anime Yu-Gi-Oh! GX to be seen. Even today, the Elemental Heroes remain among the favorite archetypes of many Yu-Gi-Oh! players. But also the Dark World Monster made a very good impression even back then with their artwork and dark design on the Yu-Gi-Oh! left for players. But it wasn't just the design / artwork of the cards that was special, but also their effects, the likes of which had never been seen before in Yu-Gi-Oh! had! Let's take a closer look at these special effects.

How does the Dark World archetype work?

With the monsters of the dark world it's all about one thing: shedding! Yes, it might sound strange, but that's exactly what made it so special. The Dark World Monster all had special effects, which they could only use if they first went through a Effect from the Hand to the Dropped off at the cemetery were. However, there was only a single Dark World Monster, which had the effect of another Dark World Monster to discard from the hand to the graveyard. These are:

Brron, Mad King of Dark World

Brron was the only Dark World Monster that had the ability to discard a card from the hand without being dependent on another card. However, you had to with Brron first deal battle damage to the opponent! That was all much too slow, which is why Brron was not necessarily played.

Cheerful Coffin

So first, you had to dig all the cards out of the basement and see which cards you actually owned that discard other cards from your hand to the graveyard! Quite a few were found (especially spell cards) that work very well in combination with the Dark World could play with monsters. The most popular one was probably Cheerful Coffin!

This ancient map, which dates back to the release of the Dark World Monster seemed to be completely useless, it finally actually had a purpose! Because with this card, you could simply [do something] up to 3 Dark World discard monsters from your hand and trigger their effects. Today, there are naturally much better cards than this one, which makes it irrelevant again at the moment, but back then it was Merry Coffin a highlight.

God of Cards: Fröhlicher Sarg Kartenbild

Drag down into the grave

This card was truly a very good support for Dark World. You were able to discard a potentially important card from your opponent's hand while simultaneously ensuring that a Dark World Monster was discarded from one's own hand! After that, both players drew 1 card. Pretty irrelevant nowadays, but back then it was definitely a good option!

Now, let's take a closer look at the Dark World monsters.

Broww, Huntsman of Dark World

Browww was and still is a very nice card to use in a Dark World Deck faster to get to other cards. Because if Browww is discarded, you can draw a card from your deck. If Browww ... but is actually sent to the Graveyard by an opponent's card effect, you can even draw 2 cards!

God of Cards: Broww, Jäger der Finsteren Welt Kartenbild

Beiige, Vanguard of Dark World

Beige is already significantly more aggressive. When Beige is discarded to the Graveyard by a card effect, it is Special Summoned from the Graveyard directly to the field! With 1600 ATK, it wasn't that dangerous on its own, but it rarely came alone! Alternatively, you could also use it for Tribute Summons use, for example, to Monarchs to summon.

Caius the Shadow Monarch

The Monarch, which best suits Dark World fit! From the attribute Darkness and of type Fiend! This means that Caius so the 2 most important features with all Dark World monsters, and also works very well that way, since with a Dark World deck repeatedly Special Summons monsters, which you then use for Caius can sacrifice. Also more of a card that belongs to the past, but is still extremely strong enough to at least be considered!

But now let's move on to the stronger Dark World Monsters.

Goldd & Sillva

God of Cards: Goldd Kartenbild
God of Cards: Sillva Kartenbild

Goldd and Sillva were/are the more dangerous monsters of the dark Archetypes. They both have the same ATK and DEF values, and the same effect as Beige. They also only need to be discarded from the hand to the Graveyard to then be Special Summoned directly to the field from there. With 2300 ATK, they were already quite a threat back then, but they even have an additional effect if they are discarded from the hand to the Graveyard by an opponent's effect. In that case, Sillva namely, shuffle 2 cards from your opponent's hand into the deck. Goldd ... instead, destroy 2 cards on your opponent's side of the field.

Over time, the Archetype received much more support, and more and more cards were released that could discard cards from the hand to the Graveyard through an effect. Here are the remaining Dark World Monsters, and the cards that, in combination with the Underworlders the dark world work incredibly well.

Ceruli, Guru of Dark World

We have already mentioned a few times that certain Dark World Monster receive an additional effect if they are discarded to the Graveyard by an opponent's effect. However, you don't have to leave this entirely to chance. Ceruliid ensures that exactly that happens! Because when Ceruliid is discarded from the hand, it is Special Summoned to the opponent's side of the field and activates the following effect there:

"Your opponent must discard 1 card"

God of Cards: Ceruli, Guru der finsteren Welt Kartenbild

Since this card is now in the opponent's possession, the effect of this card naturally affects the Dark World Player. So the Dark World Player in this case, discard a card from your hand, which was triggered by the effect of an opponent's card, since Ceruliid is located on the opponent's half of the field at that time.

Green & Khaki

God of Cards: Gren Kartenbild
God of Cards: Kahkki Kartenbild

Green & Khaki are rather weak monsters, which especially in modern Yu-Gi-Oh! hardly see any plays. Back then, however, they were quite interesting. If Green is discarded, it destroys one Spell/Trap card on the field. Khaki destroys a monster.

Now let's move on to the 2 probably best Dark World Monsters released so far:

Snoww, Unlight of Dark World

If Snoww is discarded from the hand, you can choose any Dark World Take a card from the deck into your hand. This allows you to choose something suitable for every situation, which Snoww incredibly strong and important. If Snoww is discarded by an opponent's card effect, you can additionally target 1 monster in your opponent's Graveyard; Special Summon that target in Defense Position!

God of Cards: Snoww, Unlicht der finsteren Welt Kartenbild

Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World

The most powerful yet Dark World Monster. With 2700 ATK and 2 incredibly powerful effects, is Grapha arguably the most powerful monster of the archetype (excluding the new Structure Deck). Because if Grapha is discarded, it destroys any card on the field. Additionally, you can Grapha summon from the Graveyard to the field at any time, simply by [doing something with] another Dark World sends monsters from their side of the field to the hand. This makes it very difficult to Grapha to get rid of.

The most popular support cards and combinations with Dark World

As previously mentioned, Cheerful Coffin no longer relevant for the Dark World Decks. Here we show you the best support cards!

Deals with the Dark World

Each player draws 1 card, then each player discards 1 card. Extremely strong in a Dark World Deck, but you shouldn't use this card against a Dark World Play deck!

God of Cards: Geschäfte mit der finsteren Welt Kartenbild

Card Destruction

An extremely old and limited card. Probably the best spell card in combination with Dark World. The more Dark World The more monster cards you discard with this card, the stronger the final result. But here too, the rule applies: Just don't against Dark World insert!

God of Cards: Kartenzerstörung Kartenbild

Gates of the Dark World

A permanent card in the form of a Field Spell Card also has Dark World to offer. With this card, once per turn, you can 1 Fiend Monster (also Dark World discard Monster) and draw 1 card from the Deck. Additionally, it has the continuous effect that all monsters of the type Fiend gain 300 ATK and DEF. The "cost" of this card is not really significant, especially since the effect for a Dark World Deck is incredibly strong.

God of Cards: Die Tore der finsteren Welt Kartenbild

Allure of Darkness

This card should actually be a staple in any deck that primarily Darkness Monster plays. Although this card does not trigger Dark World effects; however, it makes the deck significantly more consistent, as it ensures that you draw 2 more cards from the deck.

God of Cards: Verlockung der Finsternis Kartenbild

"Danger!" Monsters

The "Danger!" Monsters are very often combined with the Dark World monsters played. They are almost made for each other, as they all have pretty much the same, extremely powerful effect:

Discard a random card from your hand! If the discarded card is not the Danger! has been a monster himself, the Danger! Monster summoned to the field and you draw a card as a bonus! But that's not all, because if you use the effect to Dark World monster has been discarded, the effect also activates in the Graveyard. In addition, all Danger! Monster also have a 2nd effect that only activates if they are sent from the hand to the Graveyard (so the same deal as with the Dark World monsters). Thus, the two fit Archetypes incredibly well together. Here are the 4 most popular Danger! Monsters that, in combination with Dark World to be played:

Also the "Legendary" Monsters have similar effects. However, there are/were mainly 1 Legendary Monster that loves to play with Dark World played together:

Legendary Raven

Legendary Raven Once per turn, you can discard as many cards from your hand as you like. It gains 400 ATK for each discarded card. Additionally, its Level increases by 1 for each discarded card. You can therefore use it to [do] as many Dark World and/or Danger! Discard monsters as you please to trigger all graveyard effects. At the same time, you can optionally make Synchro plays, as the Raven is a Tuner monster.
