Yugioh Master Duel Banlist January 2023

God of Cards: Blogbanner Yugioh Master Duel Banlist Januar 2023

Konami releases the next Yugioh Master Duel Banlist! Valid from 01/10/2023!

Konami has actually released the upcoming banlist before 2023. This is set to take effect from 01/10/2023. With this banlist, a total of 12 changes await us! Some of them very relevant, others rather irrelevant at the moment. However, no card was actually banned with this banlist! 2 cards were limited to 1, another 8 cards to 2, and the remaining 2 cards on this list are unlimited from 01/10/2023!

1. Limited Cards

Super Rare

Block Dragon

(3 ⇒ 1)

For almost a year now, Block Dragon has been played mainly together with the archetype

""Summoners Art" or better known by its English name "Adamancipator" in Yugioh Master Duel. Right from the start of Yugioh Master Duel, Adamancipator has been among the strongest decks. For several months, it was perhaps even the most played and strongest deck in Master Duel. Even today, this deck is still incredibly strong due to this powerful Block Monster and often dominates the meta.

Konami has finally limited the Block Dragon after such a long time. But is that enough? In our opinion, no! Although the probability of drawing the Block Dragon is now much lower, it's not necessary anyway, since you can search for the Block Dragon from the deck and add it to your hand.

You do this by simply summoning the Rank 4 XYZ Monster "Blockout", with the effect of which you can take 1 Rock Monster from the deck into your hand. From that point on, Block Dragon does the rest. If the opponent has managed to get everything set up without you being able to stop them, things look very bad, because the "End Board" that can be laid with Adamancipator in combination with the Block Dragon is incredibly difficult to break.

Why then only limited to 1 and not banned immediately? Konami does not want to completely remove the deck theme ""Adamancipator" from the meta, which would be the case without the Block Dragon. They already did this several years ago in the TCG. Nevertheless, this hit bothers Adamancipator players. Because if Blockout, for example, is stopped by a hand trap, and you didn't already have the Block Dragon in your hand or graveyard, you usually can't complete your combo anymore. So, this limitation significantly reduces the consistency of Adamancipator and makes them more vulnerable to hand traps and other so-called "".

Super Rare

Supreme King Dragon Starving Venom

(3 ⇒ 1)The second and last limited card on this list is also a monster with the rarity "Super Rare". This hit was also long overdue. This monster is the main card for quite a few "First Turn Kill" (FTK) combinations. In our opinion, Konami could have really banned this card as well to prevent annoying FTK combos in the future. However, the Starving Venom Dragon at 1 is no longer as effective. To still pull off an FTK

with it now, you have to do significantly more, and thus lose a lot of consistency.

2. Semi-Limited

Now let's move on to the 8 cards that, with this banlist from 01/10/2023, can be played a maximum of 2 times in each deck.

Super Rare

Aluber the Jester of Despia

(3 ⇒ 2)And we're starting right off with the most popular monster on this list! Aluber is the monster that, among other things, can add the most important Fusion Card of the deck (Branded Despia) from the deck to your hand. This Fusion Card, called "Branded Fusion", is still allowed 3 times. Thus, with Aluber, you effectively had 6 times Branded Fusion in the deck! Konami has now reduced this to 5, as "Branded Despia" is still arguably the most played and one of the strongest decks in Master Duel. It is also arguably the most expensive meta deck in Master Duel, as you need a lot of Ultra Rare cards for the deck. In any case, this is a good hit in our opinion to reduce the consistency of Branded Despia.

Super Rare

Predaplant Scorpionic Grass

(1 ⇒ 2)

Here we have the first upgrade! Previously limited to 1, and from 01/10/2023 finally allowed twice! This card belongs to the archetype "Predaplant", or better known by its English name "Predaplant". Predaplants have been becoming increasingly popular in the Master Duel community lately. They are often combined with Despia / Branded at the moment. With the Scorpion at 2, the deck should definitely become a lot better!

Rare

Supreme King Dragon Darkwurm

(1 ⇒ 2)

This upgrade is the only Pendulum Monster on this list. A very important starter for some Pendulum decks, which are already quite strong, but are still not played by many players. With this upgrade, we might see a few more players giving Pendulum Monsters a chance!

God of Cards: Oberster König Drachenfinstergewürm Kartenbild

Ultra Rare

Sky Striker Ace - Kagari

(1 ⇒ 2)

An incredible surprise & thus incredible support for Sky Striker! With Kagari, a lot changes for all Sky Striker players! Not without reason does this monster have the Ultra rarity, because Kagari is arguably the best Sky Striker monster, and was therefore limited to 1. With Kagari and Engage (arguably the best Sky Striker Spell Card) at 2, the deck can now definitely do much more than before. We recommend everyone to give this deck a chance. It is definitely one of the best "Control" or "going 2nd" decks in the game!

Now for the 4 Spell Cards that will also be limited to 2 with this list.

Super Rare

Card of Demise

(3 ⇒ 2)

You know it very well from the OG Yu-Gi-Oh! Anime character Seto Kaiba.

But unlike in the anime, this card is incredibly strong only in "defensive" decks. With this card, you simply have the opportunity to draw 3 more cards. Just like that! It has a few drawbacks, but there are "defensive decks" that are not bothered by these drawbacks at all, and thus can draw way too many cards essentially for free! The hit is definitely understandable, especially considering that this card is even limited to 1 in the TCG.

Super Rare

Pot of Prosperity

(3 ⇒ 2)

You know the Pots in Yugioh. Almost all of them are/were always meta relevant. The Pots almost always ensure that you get to your cards / combos significantly faster. This Pot only has the disadvantage that you cannot Special Summon any monsters during the turn you activate it. While that automatically means that most meta decks cannot play it, we just had the topic of "defensive decks". However, this semi-limitation is more about hitting a specific deck theme called "Windwitch", as the deck is too consistent with 3 x Pot of Prosperity and does not Special Summon any monsters anyway.

Super Rare

Divine Wind of the Mist Valley

(1 ⇒ 2)

A really very dangerous Field Spell Card which can easily summon 1 monster from the deck. Thus, the reason why the card has been limited to 1 until now. However, Konami is now giving the community the chance to play it twice, incl. 1 x Fissure, with which you can add the Divine Wind from the deck to your hand. So far, hardly anyone has played this Field Spell Card in Yugioh Master Duel. Let's see what the community does with the opportunity!

Super Rare

Secret Scroll of the Spellbook

(1 ⇒ 2)

This Spellbook is a Quick-Play Spell for which we wonder what Konami was thinking. A few months ago it was Forbidden. Then it was limited to 1, and now to 2. This could really cause a lot of chaos, as it is incredibly strong. Thanks to this change, we will definitely see significantly more players either playing a Spellbook deck directly, or at least using the Spellbook cards as an "Engine" in other decks. We are very excited to see what this change will bring, but we are also concerned that this card could become very intrusive.

God of Cards: Magiebuch des Urteils Kartenbild

3. Unlimited

2 cards have completely made it off the banlist! Both cards are Extra Deck Machine Monsters! Let's take a closer look at them!

Ultra Rare

ABC-Dragon Buster

(2 ⇒ 3)

Finally, it's unlimited! ABC-Dragon Buster has completely made it off the banlist! This boss monster is really simple to summon, yet so effective. It can banish 1 card on the field at any time by discarding 1 card. And it can also "split" back into the 3 Fusion Materials it consists of at any time. So you can remove many of the opponent's cards from the game with this card, and at the same time have the option to dodge the opponent's effects! Especially when you consider that it can't be long until we finally welcome "Therion" in Master Duel, this expensive UR card is even more worthwhile!

God of Cards: ABC-Drachenbuster Kartenbild

Ultra Rare

Gearframe Geargia

(2 ⇒ 3)

The last card is also an Ultra Rare. Gearframe used to be one of the most popular and strongest XYZ Monsters. Even today, it can deal a lot of damage, as it can easily summon 1 "Geargia" monster from the deck. The summoned monster can activate its effects and can also be used for further summons like Link. So it's a pretty good thing, and in our opinion a nice move by Konami!

God of Cards: Aufzieh-Träger Zenmeilen Kartenbild

➡️ Conclusion

We at God of Cards consider this banlist to be a success overall.Konami has reasonably limited some problematic cards, and given other cards / decks a great opportunity with the lifting of limitations! We are very excited to see what the Master Duel Community will do with it in the near future, and we are very happy to report on it!
